With effect from 2022, the National Identification Number will become a major requirement for registration for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, according to the West African Examinations Council.

Mr Patrick Areghan, the Head of WAEC’s Nigeria Office, announced this on Tuesday at a press conference to launch preparations for the WASCCE in 2021.

The 2021 WASSCE, according to him, will begin on August 16 and end on October 8, 2021.

“Let me use this medium to declare that, as we move in the conduct of the council’s business in Nigeria, NIN will become a major condition for registration for the WASSCE with effect from the WASSCE for school candidates in 2022 and future dates (No NIN, no entry!)”

He urged pupils in grades one and two to begin registering for the NIN for the year 2022.

“This implies that all applicants must enroll with the National Identity Management Commission and get a National Identification Number (NIN).” The Federal Government’s policy, as guided by the Federal Ministry of Education, is in line with this.

“In addition, the WASSCE 2021 will be held throughout the sub-region from Monday, August 16th to Friday, October 8th, 2021, in conformity with the final international calendar. However, the test in Nigeria would end on September 30, 2021, after seven weeks.”

He added that 1,573,789 candidates would be presented by 19,425 accredited secondary schools, including 8,052 public and 11,373 private institutions.
