Nigeria has been fraught with insecurity challenges, from Boko Haram and their ISWAP counterparts to Bandits and unknown gun men, in the midst of all this, the statistics of unemployed youths and graduates in the nation has been rising to an alarming rate.2

Recently Police in Plateau state have confirmed the killing of 22 commuters by irate youths in the Rukuba area of Jos, the state capital.Spokesperson of the Command Gabriel Abuh said the victims were in a convoy of 5 buses from Bauchi to the Southern part of the country when they were attacked Saturday morning. The youth had blocked the road in protest of recent attacks and killing of locals by suspected herder militiamen in Bassa local government area of the state before the act began. But the authorities say beyond the 22 lives lost, 14 others sustained varying degrees of injury.3

While reacting to the news, President Muhammadu Buhari has met with Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi days after 22 of the cleric’s followers were massacred in Plateau State. He was received at the Presidential Villa on Thursday, August 19, 2021.

The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami. The minister had told the cleric that the president lost his appetite for food when he received news of the attack.

President Buhari said last week the ‘heinous’ attack was planned to specifically target the victims because of their religion.Make no mistake about it: in line with my commitment to protect all Nigerians, I have ordered our security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of this gruesome massacre of innocent travellers and bring them to justice,” he said.

DIG Sanusi Lemu leads Police Intervention Team, The IGP, while condemning the incident, has called for calm and assured victims and relatives of the attack that the Police are working with the military, other security forces and the State Government to ensure that all perpetrators of the unfortunate incident are brought to book. Meanwhile, the IGP noted that twenty (20) suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack while thirty-three (33) victims have been rescued.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Edward Egbuka, had also gave assurance that those behind the attack would be brought to justice.

In my own opinion, with Mr President intervention it as show that, those behind the attack will be arrested, one of the reasons why Muslims should not embark on a reprisal attack is that Islam is a religion of peace. It would lead to further loss of lives and properties if the offended party decided to retaliate or launch a counterattack in the state. Therefore, the best thing I think the Muslim faithful should do is to join hands with the state government to ensure that the perpetrators are captured and brought to book so that such an occurrence will not repeat itself.
