According to Webometrics rankings released in August 2021, the best ten state universities in Nigeria are from the Southern part of the country. Interestingly, the best state university from the Northern part of Nigeria (Benue State University) occupies eleventh position among the state universities. The list of the best twenty state universities in Nigeria is given below.

Checking through the list of the best twenty state universities, there are fifteen from the South and five from North. Each of the South West and South South geopolitical zones of Nigeria has six universities in the list. This leaves the South East with only three of the universities. Interestingly, best five out of the twenty universities are owned by governments of South Western states.
Three out of the state universities that made the top 20 list are from the North Central leaving only two from the North West. One interesting fact is that the best state university from the North West (Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University) occupies 18th position among state-owned institutions (57th overall).
One point worthy of note is that the best state university (Ladoke Akintola University of Technology) occupies 12th position in Nigeria. This is behind behind Covenant University (2nd) and Landmark University (9th) which are private universities.
