Some people usually notice white spots on their nails without knowing what they are. These spots can occur in anybody but they are mostly common in children. When you see these spots that is a sign that your body is lacking something.
What does the white spots mean?
The white spots that appear on your nails are known as leukonychia. There are different types of leukonychia that occurs in people. This condition could make your whole nail white (total leukonychia) or some areas of your nail white (partial leukonychia).
There are different factors that can make leukonychia to develop. Some could be physical while others occur as a result of some health conditions.
Below are the causes of leukonychia.
1. Poisoning or medication.
Exposure to poisonous substances such as lead or arsenic can lead to leukonychia. Also, medication used for treating bacteria and urinary tract infections can cause leukonychia. Finally, this condition can occur as a result of chemotherapy which is used for treating cancer.
2. Nail injury
When you damage your nails, it could affect your nail plate or matrix thereby making your nails white. This damage could occur due to excess pressure on your nail, nail biting and nail fixing.
3. Fungal infection
4. Diabetes
5. Heart failure
6. Kidney disease
7. Zinc and Iron deficiency
8. Poor assimilation of protein by your body.
