Southerners are clamoring for the ticket of Nigeria’s President in 2023, Southern governors even had a meeting in July which they concluded that the next president of Nigeria in 2023 should come from the South. There are three geopolitical zones in the South namely; South-South, South East, and South West. Out of the three geopolitical zones, only the South East has not been elected to the position of President in Nigeria since the return of democracy in Nigeria in 1999.
Olusegun Obasanjo who is from the southwest geopolitical zone was the president of Nigeria between 1999 and 2007, while Goodluck Jonathan who is from the South-South geopolitical zone was the president of Nigeria between 2009 and 2015. It is only the southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria that is left to clinch the post. Organizations such as the Ohanaeze Youth Council have been calling for the zoning of the position to the South East for equity to reign.
One important thing to note is that politics is by number and supports from other Nigerians. The Igboland is currently facing two major problems that will prevent its people from becoming the president of Nigeria in 2023. The majority of people in the South East Are clamoring for the Biafra Republic, this might push them to not vote for their kinsmen in 2023 and will affect their chance of becoming the president of Nigeria. Secondly, Igbos are not united like the South West and South-South, politicians in Igboland don’t have the same goal, and might not support each other, instead, they will prefer to support other candidates from other zones in the South.
Thirdly, South East does not have the voters number that can make a president in Nigeria, so they need to align with other parts of Nigeria to get the position. They need to align with the North which they have not even started yet and might be too late. The Southerner that can become the president of Nigeria is Bola Ahmed Tinubu because he has aligned well with the North and can gather massive votes in the South East, South West, and South-South that will make him the president of Nigeria.
