Following their 1 – 1 draw at the St Mary’s Stadium, Manchester United have now equalled Arsenals all time Premier League away record. The Red Devils made it 27 straight games in which they have avoided defeat away from home.
Haven started the season in the best possible fashion by beating Leeds United 5 – 1, they have now drawn their second game of the season against Southampton to match another record.
Recall that in that 5 – 1 victory on the opening weekend of the new campaign, Bruno Fernandez scored a hat trick. He therefore became the 6th player to score a hat trick on the opening week of a Premier League season, the first Manchester United player to do that.
Similarly, Paul Pogba also became the 10th player to provide 4 assists in a single Premier League game.
With the Red Devils now adding another record to their collections after matching the unbeaten away record, let us take a look at how they achieved this incredible feat before they have the chance to break it next week. They next travel to play an away game against Wolves.
Manchester United began this run following a 2 – 0 defeat against Liverpool on the 19th of January 2020. After this defeat, they beat Chelsea 2 – 0 at Stamford Bridge. They drew their next game against Everton in a 1 – 1 result. They achieved the same 1 – 1 draw against Tottenham in the game that followed.
Their next 5 away games ended in victories for the Red Devils. They even didn’t concede a single goal in all five consecutive victories.
The five games include a 0 – 3 victory at the Amex Stadium against Brighton, another 0 – 3 win at Villa Park against Aston Villa, a 0 – 2 win away at Crystal Palace, another 0 – 2 win against Leicester at the King Power and finally a 0 – 1 win at Burnley.
After this run, the club went on another run of 6 straight games in which they scored at least three goals while also conceding first in each of the 6 games. Solskjaer’s men beat Brighton 2 – 3 away from home, beat Newcastle 1 – 3, Everton 1 – 4, Everton 1 – 3, Southampton 2 – 3, West Ham 1 – 3 and Sheffield United 2 – 3.
They played out a 2 – 2 draw at the King Power against Leicester City and beat Fulham 1 – 2 at Craven Cottage. These two results were followed by four straight draws in which they scored only one goal.
It remains their poorest series of results in this incredible run. Two 0 – 0 results against Liverpool and Arsenal were followed by a 1 – 1 draw against West Brom and another 0 – 0 draw against Chelsea.
They then achieved a 0 – 2 victory against their city rivals Manchester City before playing another goalless draw at Crystal Palace. Their next way game was a 1 – 3 victory at the Tottenham Hot Spurs Stadium. They then played yet another 0 – 0 draw at Leeds United before they beat Aston Villa 1 – 3 at Villa Park again.
In their last game last season, a Juan Mata penalty and a goal from Anthony Ellanga ensured Manchester United finished the season unbeaten away from home.
The run was then stretched to 26 games, one behind Arsenals’s 27. With today’s draw at the St Mary’s, they have now matched that record. Happy times to be a Manchester United fan.
While the club can celebrate matching this record for now, they will be hoping they can break this record when they travel to Wolves next week. Can they do it? We will have to wait for answers.
