Okocha wonder goal comparison delights German Holtmann

Bochum winger, Gerrit Holtmann, says he is over the moon after his excellent strike against Mainz at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion last weekend drew comparisons with Nigerian legend Austin Okocha’s wonder goal for Eintracht Frankfurt almost three decades ago.

In August 1993, during Frankfurt’s 3-1 victory over Karlsruher SC, Okocha tore Karlsruher’s defenders into shreds inside the box, sending legendary German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn sprawling, before unleashing a left-footed shot past the perplexed shot-stopper.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, in an interview, described Okocha’s goal as the most spectacular in the history of German football.

Holtmann brought to mind the memories of the goal when he grabbed the opening goal for Bremen on August 21 and got tongues waggling inside the stadium.

The forward went on a solo run, dribbling past defenders before shooting through the legs of Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner in the 21st minute.

In an interview with Bundesliga.com, the German star said he was proud to have had his wonderful goal compared with that of Okocha’s.

“You admired it as a child,” Holtmann told Bundesliga.com, recalling Okocha’s goal.

“He (Okocha) went through (the defenders) as if they were only flagpoles. I would be happy if my goal was compared with it.”
