Manchester United will face Liverpool on Sunday in an attempt to resurrect their Premier League campaign. They may be without five crucial players for the match against the Reds at Old Trafford.
Here are 5 Manchester United players that could miss the match against Liverpool:
1. Raphael Varane
Raphael Varane is one player who is certain to be left out against Liverpool. During his country’s Nations League victory against Spain earlier this month, the France international sustained an injury.
With Varane out, Victor Lindelof is set to partner with Harry Maguire in the starting lineup. The duo’s chemistry appears to have deteriorated this season, but it provides the Sweden international with a wonderful opportunity to prove he has what it takes to be a regular starter against their fierce opponents.
2. Anthony Martial
Solskjaer acknowledged Anthony Martial’s return to training before United’s Champions League victory. It’s still uncertain whether United will include him in their lineup against Liverpool as they try to get all three points.
They have enough attacking talent to deal with it, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Martial’s return will be postponed.
3. Fred
In the triumph over Atalanta, Manchester United’s Fred was also forced off. And, as of now, the Red Devils haven’t said if he will be ready for Sunday’s game.
This season, the Brazil international has been criticized for his performances. To counter Liverpool’s midfield, United will need to perform at the highest level.
So it’s understandable if Solskjaer wishes for the Samba star to return sooner rather than later.
4. Marcus Rashford
Marcus Rashford was substituted in Manchester United’s thrilling victory over Atalanta. The Red Devils may not consider Rashford’s selection to be worth the risk, given that he has recently recovered from shoulder surgery.
If he doesn’t return in time, Jadon Sancho may be given the nod instead.
5. Bruno Fernandes
On Tuesday, United fought to beat Atalanta 3-2 in the Champions League. Bruno Fernandes dazzled.
They could, however, be without the Portugal international for Sunday’s match. According to the Sun, Fernandes was limping at Carrington on Thursday after participating in a warm-up exercise.
If the Portugal international does not recover in time, Solskjaer and his team will suffer a major setback. But it would give Jesse Lingard a chance to start after the England international had to make do with bench roles so far.
